February, 2007

Welcome friends & family!
This is the very first issue of the monthly Fire Groove Newsletter. We'd like to use this newsletter as a place to explore ideas, to bring awareness to our community, to inspire each other, and to support one-another through all of life's challenges. This is just the beginning of an evolving piece of work. If you have any ideas, or anything you'd like to share, don't hesitate to contact us!

As February rolls on by, we can't help but think about love... but what exactly is love?
Love is the supreme healing power. It looks beyond what appears to be true to what is true. Love is the willingness to see that which is real in each and everything. It's the willingness to let go of what you think something is in order to see it clearly. You can learn to love by learning to forgive.

Happy Valentine's Day

Elevation through Inspiration

When I first started to spin poi and staff up in Oregon I craved any information I could get on the subject! I would over use butterfly and weave because I didn't know what else to do. To make matters more frustrating the only people who knew what else to do lived too far away from me to visit regularly (so I thought)….

And Then Weird Things Began To Happen… Fire Dancers just started appearing all around me! I was blind at first to them, but once my eyes were opened, there they were. Old friends, new friends, the young, and the old all dancing right smack dab in front of me! Immediately my motivation for playing with fire skyrocketed, and it gave me a whole new surge of collective energy that got me to where I am today!

That same concept rules my life…

Sometimes you just feel like you've reached a plateau and often get bored of spinning (or whatever it is you are doing.) Then someone comes around and opens your eyes to a whole new dimension you never knew existed. Suddenly a new motivation burns inside of you, and you can't wait to practice again and again! That right there is the reason I live for fire dancing! Because I know there is no end to how far it will go. It is a developing art form in which all levels of spinners can influence all other levels, leading to an overall increase in skill and creativity. We thank all of those dancers who have taken the time to come here to Los Angeles to share their knowledge with us; Nick Woolsey, Charisse, Matthew of Flamma Aeterna, Sean & Prisna of Flowtoys, Arashi, and Bryan a.k.a Heph.

We also look forward to a new round of inspiration coming this weekend from what I consider the best brother duo spinners in the world (not lying) Zan and Noah Moore from Instruments of the Now based out of Colorado. They produced the "Encyclo-poi-dia" which is an amazing instructional poi video. Also coming down from San Fran is Noel Yee and Greg Maldonado. Noel has taught dozens of contact staff workshops all around the country focusing his time in the fire dancing Mecca (the Bay Area). Keep an eye out for his instructional contact staff video coming out this spring! Greg on the other hand will be teaching contact juggling which will be our first time offering this art form. He produced the award winning video series "Contact Juggling" which brought him the title America's Most Famous Contact Juggler. In April, we have the honor of hosting an internationally known and highly skilled staff spinner and contact juggler, Ima. Based out of Paris France, Ima is known for organizing and leading Burn Crew Concepts, one of the largest fire communities in Europe. Ima will be teaching several workshops including: staff, contact staff, double staff, isolations, anti-spins, throws & catches, and partner passing.

I can't wait for these guys to inspire and push my spinning in a whole new direction, and I hope if any of these workshops interests you then join us for a day of creative arts this Saturday and Monday at our new Santa Monica studio, Dance Studio No. 1 (2037 Granville Ave, LA 90025).

Fire Groove's Hot New Additions: Jade & Heather
by Kamala

I remember the first time I saw Heather… It was at Moon Circle and she was in a furry white sweater looking like a goddess and dancing in front of the fire… I knew right then that she would be an amazing fire dancer. Three years later Heather has decided to join the Fire Groove team to teach and perform all over the world. We are so excited to collaborate with such an amazing spirit! Heather has a strong love for yoga and has been teaching and practicing since 2000. She also has a background in dance and is one of the most sought after pole dance instructors in the world today! I don't know about you but I see a Pole Groove class coming in the near future! Her moves are fluid and sexy combining her innocence with a naughty spicy twist. To see her dance with fire is a beautiful thing and we are so excited to have her join the Fire Groove team. She teaches with patience and kindness making her students feel inspired and leaving them wanting more. Heather will be teaching in Hollywood and Santa Monica starting with poi and moving into staff and hoop. We love you Heather and support all of your dreams!

Jade Mangiafico has been a family member to Fire Groove since birth. His father Chad actually helped to build our parents home! Community is something that we believe will help bring about a healthier life… Jade is Fire Groove family and community! Jade has been spinning fire longer than any of us siblings at Fire Groove. He took off to Thailand in 1998 and when he saw fire he fell in love! If you have ever witnessed Jade with the fire… you have experienced the pure joy, bliss and excitement that he brings to fire spinning. His moves are raw and one of a kind, and his smile when he spins… well it can light up a room. Jade has been training hard with Lester to not only learn the Fire Groove method but also bring his own knowledge into our teaching. Watch out ladies... this one is a hottie. On that note, so is his goddess girlfriend Jen Pettigrew who is Fire Groove's sexy new clothing designer! More on Jen next month...

Fire Groove's goal is to build a community of like minded healthy individuals who are changing the world starting with themselves… Being open to new ideas and dreams…. Supporting everyone and encouraging them to do whatever they want in their life. If you want to be a Fire Groove teacher, the time is now! Let's make a difference in this world, starting right here right now with ourselves! Encourage others to be all that they can be… and you will shine feeling them grow!

Thank you so much for supporting us in our dreams, without you… none of this would be possible!

Excuse Me, Your Life is Waiting by Lynn Grabhorn

The most unconscious thing we do all day long is what actually creates and molds every moment of every day of our lives. And what is this "thing" that governs us so forcefully? Feelings! Grabhorn reveals how our feelings make our lives what they are - not positive thinking, or sweat and strain, or good or bad luck, or even smarts, but feelings: good ones, bad ones, up ones, down ones, and all the ones in between.
